It’s said that the Soul of the South resides in Macon, with Gone With The Wind-style mansions and more acreage listed on the National Historic registry than any other Georgia city. Apart from being home to Old South landmarks and musical icons from Little Richard to Brenda Lee, Macon is also home to friendly restaurateurs serving an abundance good southern food. Annual events such as the city’s Cherry Blossom Festival draw crowds each year, typically bringing ravenous appetites for tastes of Macon. Names don’t always tell the full story, with the Grits Café serving upscale southern food, including andouille-crusted oysters and Fried Green Tomatoes Napolean. The Back Burner’s menu ranges from fresh grouper to farm-raised rabbit and Osso Bucco Milanese. The Red Tomato is known for Continental cuisine with an infusion of Southern, Italian and French, whereas the Midtown Grill touts Georgia trout and marinated pork chops. At the Tic Toc Room, in the heart of historic downtown, patrons are treated to an expansive martini menu and a wine list spotlighting more than 200 premium selections. Ingleside Village Pizza, featuring hand-tossed New York-style pizza with its own dough, claims the best selection of imported beers in Macon. On the chain front at more than one Macon location (and elsewhere in the southeast), S&S Cafeterias tantalize with homemade pastries, big, fat fluffy biscuits and entrees like chicken fried steak.
